Every brand has an origin story. Some are invented after the fact, polished up to sound good in a pitch deck. Ours wasn’t. Ours came from the street.
Where it all began: “Pick am”
If you grew up in a Nigerian city, you know the sound of a hawker’s megaphone crackling to life. “Baje baje phone dey here o! Original property, buy am cheap cheap!” A wheelbarrow of clothes. A bicycle loaded with pots and pans. A truck with an old television strapped to the back, the seller shouting prices at every junction.
You didn’t go looking for what you needed, you waited for it to pass by. And when it did, when the price was right and the item was exactly what you’d been hoping to find, you said the two words that sealed the deal: “Pick am.”
That phrase, simple, familiar, spoken without a second thought, is where our name comes from. It’s a name that feels like home because it was pulled straight out of everyday Nigerian life, not built in a boardroom.
What Pikkam actually is
Pikkam is a modern classified marketplace designed to connect buyers and sellers in a simple, fast, and relatable way. It’s built with the Nigerian market in mind, from the ground up, not adapted from a foreign platform and hoped it would fit. The goal is straightforward: make the process of finding, choosing, and exchanging goods or services easy for everyone, whether you’re an individual clearing out a wardrobe or a small business owner moving inventory.
The name reflects that purpose directly. “Pick am” is about helping people quickly identify what they need and confidently make a choice, no long searches, no guesswork, no waiting around for a hawker who may or may not show up on your street this week.
More than a marketplace
We don’t think of Pikkam as just an app where listings go up and transactions happen. It’s a user-centered brand built to bridge convenience with trust. In a market where “buying used” often comes with hesitation, is this seller real, is this a fair price, will this actually get delivered, Pikkam is positioned to be the reliable digital space where transactions feel seamless and community-driven, the same way a trusted local market does.
At its heart, Pikkam represents four things: simplicity, accessibility, innovation, and connection. Every decision on the platform, from how listings are built to how buyers and sellers communicate, is meant to serve those four ideas, not distract from them.
Why this still matters in Nigeria today
The instinct behind those old street hawkers never disappeared. People still have things of real value sitting idle, clothes, electronics, furniture, kitchen equipment, even property, and other people still need exactly those things, often at a price they can actually afford. What disappeared was a reliable way to connect the two sides. WhatsApp groups, scattered Facebook posts, word of mouth, none of it replaced the simplicity of “the hawker is here, and the price is right.”
Pikkam exists to close that gap properly. Not by replacing the spirit of that old system, but by giving it structure: a place where you can list what you have, discover what you need, negotiate the way Nigerians have always negotiated, and trust that the person on the other end of the transaction is real.
The heartbeat of the brand
Underneath the interface and the features, Pikkam is really just an extension of one idea that Nigerians have practiced for generations: someone has it, someone else needs it, and all it takes is the right connection between them.
That’s what “pick am” has always meant. We just built a platform around it.
Pikkam is launching soon. Join the waitlist to be part of it from day one.
