What to Buy Used and Resell for Profit in Nigeria: Assets That Can Appreciate in Value

Two people each have ₦500,000 to spend today. One buys the latest phone. The other buys a plot of land with clean papers. Five years from now, whose money is worth more?
The phone will almost certainly be worth less, because it loses value every month. The land may be worth more, because people keep needing it. That gap is the difference between an item that depreciates and one that appreciates, and it is the first thing every smart reseller learns.
Buying used makes the math even better, because a lower entry price leaves more room for profit. But the real money is made when you buy, not when you sell. Buy something people will still want, at a fair price, then resell it at the right time.
Assets That Can Hold or Gain Value
1. Land
Land is limited and demand grows with the city, so it is a common long-term investment.
Steps: Confirm who really owns it. Get the survey plan and check that the map matches the plot by visiting it yourself. Verify the title documents with a lawyer, and fence or develop the land to protect it.
Caution: Fake papers, double sales and family disputes are common. Never pay on a seller's word alone.
2. Houses and Other Properties
A house in a growing area can be resold later for much more, especially one that has been maintained.
Steps: Study the area first: roads, power, water, schools and flooding. Inspect the structure, verify the documents, and add up repair costs before you pay.
Caution: Properties are expensive, slow to sell and costly to maintain. Buy in areas people actually want to live in.
3. Gold
Gold has a global price and has long been trusted as a store of value.
Steps: Check the current price per gram. Buy from a trusted dealer, get proof of purity, keep your receipt, and store it safely.
Caution: The price moves daily, and dealers buy back for less than they sell for. Fake and impure gold is a real risk.
